Thura U Shwe Mann, ousted Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) leader and former Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw formally registered a new political party with the Union Election Commission on 5th February according to Myanmar Times. He has been seen as a close ally of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the ruling party National League for Democracy (NLD) that took office in April 2016. The new party, Union Betterment Party (UBP) formed with 19 former USDP members stated that its goals are to help build a democratic federal union, develop the country, and strengthen rule of law, stability, justice and peace. In a short video posted on social media, Thura Su Shwe Mann said, “We want a proper constitution that is appropriate for our country”. “We welcome suggestions and support from the people,” he added.
