Garment Orders Slump, Garment Sector Declines

· Trade,Economy

Garment factories are facing the decline of orders from the European Union for spring clothing by more than half, according to the Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association (MGMA). This year the factories only received an estimated 20 to 25 percent of the orders compared to 2019. As the garment sector mainly relies on the US and EU markets, some factories are planning to reduce workforces and close temporarily or permanently. Since the first COVID-19 case in Myanmar in late March, many factories have cut jobs and have been forced to either temporarily or permanently close.
