The rise of Myanmar garment factories

· Economy

The numbers of garment factories have increased by 180 within 5 years according to U Aung Naing Oo, Director-General of Department of Investment and Companies Administration (DICA).

Most of products from garment factories are being exported to EU countries.

After Myanmar earned GSP rights from EU, the number of factories in Myanmar has increased to 305, 202 garment factories, 26 non-CMP factories and 77 non-CMP garment factories. They created over 300,000 jobs opportunities.

In 2013 before EU permitted GSP rights, there were 24 factories, 22 garment factories and one non-CMP factory and one CMP factory. There were over 23,000 jobs for local.

"Among the 65 percent of foreign investment, 60 percent is from China and they are mainly exported their products to EU," said secretary of UMFCCI Khine Khine Nwe.
