US Announces New Sanctions Targeting Myanmar's Military Generals

· Export,Economy,Politics

The US will impose new sanctions on Myanmar’s military generals and their close family members as well as their business interests.

“We will identify a first round of targets this week, and we're also going to impose strong exports controls,” said US president Joe Biden.

The US is freezing its assets that benefit the military, including around US$ 1 billion in Myanmar-held funds within the US while maintaining the support for health care, civil society groups, and other areas that benefit the people of Burma directly added Mr. President.

The US would be ready to impose additional measures and would work with other countries to join in pressuring the coup makers, said Mr. President.

General Min Aung Hlaing and other generals are already under US sanctions imposed in 2019 over abuses against Rohingya Muslims and other minorities.
